How to pass the Life in the UK test if you find reading English difficult.

Updated: Apr 10, 2024

The questions in the life in the UK test are testing you on the information in the official handbook - Life in the United Kingdom: A Guide for New Residents (3rd edition).

The book is produced for the Home Office by the publisher TSO.

What can you do if you find reading English difficult?

The official handbook comes in different formats – as well as a regular book, TSO offers the option to download it as an eBook, but what might be more helpful is their option to download it as an audio CD, or as an MP3 file, and hear the book read to you.

The most helpful of all of course is to take my training course for the Life in the UK test!

On the course you can listen to me talking you through the book, simplifying and explaining it, and as we go through, we practise lots of questions on what we're learning - and I read all the question out, so not a problem if reading English is difficult for you

Have a look at the clip from the course below, it shows me taking you through the short chapter of the book, 'What is the UK', and then practising questions on what we've learnt.

When it comes to taking the Life in the UK test, at the test centre you can ask for headphone to hear the questions being read - this will be in addition to seeing the questions on screen.

I have had a good number of people take the course who find reading difficult, but who have passed the test. It can be done!
